Long-Handled Wooden or Plastic Spoon

You'll be stirring the caustic lye solution with this spoon, so be sure that its handle is indeed long.

Plan on reserving the spoon for soap making only, and keep in mind that lye will eventually chew up wooden spoons.

Recycling a household spoon is fine, but don't use one stained with your favorite spaghetti sauce, or the color will transfer to your soap!
