Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is the most severe and most common rickettsial illness in the United States.

It is caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, a bacteria that is spread to humans by ticks that have fed on infected wildlife.

The signs of this disease are fever, headache, muscle pain and spotted rash. The rash is very dark – hence its nickname, Black Measles.
