Brucellosis

When brucellosis occurs in people it is called undulant fever or Malta fever. In cattle it is caused by a bacterium, Brucella abortus.

In cattle, deer, elk, swine and goats and dogs different species of the bacteria attack the reproductive organs or cause generalized malaise and fever.

In people brucellosis causes long-term malaise, joint pain, intermittent fevers and flu-like signs and fatigue. Brucellosis has almost been eradicated from cattle in the United States.
