After-Ski -Socks
Knitting Needles, 1 pair No. 5. 2 double-pointed needles (for weaving only).
Gauge:
Stockinette st - 11 sts = 2 inches; 15 rows = 2 inches.
Starting at top with Blue, cast on 54 (62) sts.
Work 5 rows of reverse stockinette st (p 1 row, k 1 row) for hem.
Note: When changing colors, always twist the unused color around the other to prevent making holes. Carry the unused color loosely along wrong side of work
Next row - wrong side: With Blue p 18 (22), drop Blue, attach Flame and p 6; drop Flame, attach White and p 6, drop White, attach another skein of Flame and p 6, drop Flame, attach another skein of Blue and p 18 (22).
Now work in pattern as follows:
1st row: With Blue k 2, (p 2, k 2) 4 (5) times; with Flame k 2, p 2, k 2; with White k 2, p 2, k 2; with Flame k 2, p 2, k 2; with Blue k 2, * p 2, k 2. Repeat from * to end of row.
2nd row: With Blue p 2, (k 2, p 2) 4 (5) times. With Flame p 2, k 2, p 2; with White p 2, k 2, p 2; with Flame p 2, k 2, p 2; with Blue p 2, complete row in k 2, p 2 ribbing.
3rd through 6th row: Repeat first and 2nd rows alternately twice more.
7th row: With Blue (k 2, p 2) 4 (S) times; slip next 2 Blue sts on a cable holder and hold in front of work, with flame k next 2 Flame sts, with Blue k the 2 sts from holder - front cable made.
With Flame p 2; slip next 2 Flame sts on a cable holder and hold in front of work, with white k next 2 White sts, with Flame k the 2 sts from holder; with White p 2.
Slip next 2 White sts on a holder and hold in back of work, with flame k next 2 flame sts, with White k the 2 sts from holder - back cable mode;
With Flame p 2; slip next 2 Flame sts on a holder and hold in back of work, with Blue k next 2 Blue sts, with Flame k the 2 stg from holder; with Blue complete row in p 2, k 2 ribbing.
8th row: With Blue (p 2, k 2) 4 (5) times; p 2 Flame, p 2 Blue, k 2 Flame, p 2 White, p 2 Flame, k 2 White, p 2 Flame, p 2 White, k 2 Flame, p 2 Blue, p 2 Flame, with Blue complete row in ribbing as before.
9th row: With Blue (k 2, p 2) 4 (5) times; k 2 Flame, k 2 Blue, p 2 Flame, k 2 White, k 2 Flame, p 2 White, k 2 Flame, k 2 White, p 2 Flame, k 2 Blue, k 2 Flame, with Blue complete row in ribbing. 10th, nth and 12th rows: Repeat 8th, 9th and 8th rows.
13th row: With Blue (k 2, p 2) 4 (5) times; slip the next 2 Flame sts onto cable holder and hold in front of work, with Blue k the next 2 Blue sts, with Flame k the 2 sts from holder, p 2 Flame, slip next 2 White sts onto holder and hold in front of work, with Flame k next 2 Flame sts, with White k the 2 sts from holder; p 2 White;
Slip next 2 Flame sts on a holder and hold in back of work, with White k the next 2 White sts, with Flame k the 2 sts from holder; p 2 Flame, slip the next 2 Blue sts on holder and hold in back of work, Continued on p with Flame k the next 2 Flame sts, with Blue k the 2 sts from holder.
With Blue complete row in ribbing. Repeat last 12 rows (2nd through 13th) 2 (3) times more, then repeat 2nd through Sth raw once. Drop all working yarns.
Marker for Heel: With a strand of contrasting colored yarn, k across next 14 (18) sts, slip next 26 sts onto same needle, with another strand of contrasting colored yarn, k remaining 14 (18) stitches. Slip all sts onto free needle. Pick up Blue and work as follows: Next row: With Blue k 14 (18), p 2; k 2 Flame, k 2 Blue, p 2 Flame, k 2 White, k 2
Flame, p 2 White, k 2 Flame, k 2 White, p 2 Flame, k 2 Blue, k 2 Flame, with Blue p 2, k 14 (18). Following row: With Blue p 14 (18), k 2; p 2 Flame, p 2 Blue, k 2 Flame, p 2 White, p 2 Flame, k 2 White, p 2 Flame, p 2 White, k 2 Flame, p 2 Blue, p 2 Flame, with Blue k 2, p 14 (16).
Working the first and last 14 (18) sts in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), and the center 26 sts in pattern, continue in pattern until length from heel markers is about 4 inches for Size 8 ½ - 9 ½;5 ½ inches for Size 10-10 1/2 and 7 1/4 inches for Size 11 – 12 ½, ending with the 2nd row of pattern.
To Shape Toe:
1st row: With Blue k 14 (18), p 2 tog, k 2; using colors as on previous row (k 2, p 2 tog, k 2) 3 times; with Blue k 2, p 2 tog, k to end of row - 49 (57) sts.
Note: Hereafter, use colors as established.
2nd row: P 14 (18), k 1, p 2; (p 2, k 1, p 2) 3 times; p 2, k 1, p to end of row.
3rd row: K 12 (16), sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., p 1, k 2 tog; (si 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., p 1, k 2 tog) 4 times; k to end of row - 39 (47) sts.
4th row: P 13 (17), k 1, p 1, (p 1, k 1, p 1) 4 times; p to end of row.
5th row: K 12 (16), (si 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 1) 4 times; k 1, k 2 tog, k to end of row. There are 34 (42) sts.
6th row: P across.
7th row: K 12 (16), si 1, k 1, p.s.s.o.; (k 2 tog) 4 times; k to end of row. There are 29 (37) sts.
8th row: P across.
9th row: Using the first Blue only and breaking off all other colors k 13 (17), sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o., k to end of row—27 (35) sts.
10th row: P across. If necessary, continue in stockinette st until length from heel markers is 5 inches for Size 8 1/2; 6 inches for Size 9-9 1/2; 7 inches for Size lO-lO 1 1/2; 8 inches for Size ll-ll 1/2; 9 inches for Size 12-12 1/2 or 3 inches less than desired length, ending with a p row.
Next row: K 5 (7), k 2 tog, place a marker on needle, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k 10 (14), k 2 tog, place another marker on needle, k 6 (8)—24 (32) Sts.
Following row: Slipping markers, p across.
Next row: (K to within 2 sts before next marker, k 2 tog, slip marker, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o.) twice; k to end of row. Repeat last 2 rows until 16 (20) sts remain, ending with a p row.
Next row: With a double-pointed needle k 4 (5), slip remaining sts onto other double-pointed needle. Slip the last 4 (5) sts of 2nd needle onto first needle, thus joining edges. Weave sts together, see below.
Half Heel: Pull out one strand of yarn which holds the heel sts on one side of sock. With wrong side facing, slip the first 14 (18) sts from one side of heel onto needle, then slip remaining 14 (18) sts from other side of heel onto same needle.
Attach yarn and k across, picking up 2 sts between the 2 groups of sts at the corner of heel—30 (38) sts.
1st row: P 15 (19), place a marker on needle, p 15 (19).
2nd row: K to within 2 sts before next marker, k 2 tog, slip marker, si 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k to end of row.
3rd row: Slipping markers, p across.
Repeat last 2 rows alternately until 12 (16) sts remain, ending with a p row.
Next row: K 6 (8). Break off, leaving an 8-inch length of yarn. Weave sts together. Work second half of heel in same manner. Sew back and sole seam. Press lightly.
Weaving
Thread needle with yarn. Holding the 2 needles together with yarn at right back, draw yarn through next st on front needle as if to purl, leave st on needle, * draw yarn through next st on back needle as if to knit, leave st on needle.
Draw yarn through same st on front needle as if to knit, drop st off needle, draw yarn through next st on front needle as if to purl, leave st on needle, draw yarn through same st on back needle as if to purl, drop st off needle. Repeat from * until all sts are woven together. Fasten securely on wrong side.
