Lois Mailou Jones (1905-1998)

Jones began studying art at an early age, encouraged by her parents. She attended the Boston Museum School full time.

She won a fellowship to the Academie Julien in Paris in 1937 and was inspired the the city's atmosphere and that a black woman encountered less prejudice there than at home.

She painted Fauvist landscapes, Cubist- influenced abstractions and a number of subjects from recent black American history.

She became a teacher at Howard University in 1930 and remained on staff until she retierd forty-seven years later.
