Working in the Round
There are two ways to begin circular crochet—with a chain or a loop. Also known as a magic ring, or finger loop, a loop is the more usual way to make amigurumi.
This way of working in the round ensures that there is no hole in the middle of the work, as there is with a chain ring, as the central hole is adjustable and can be pulled tightly closed.
Making a magic ring
1. Make a loop with tail end of yarn on right, ball end on left.
2. Pull ball end through loop (you will need to steady work with hand).
3. Make one chain through loop on hook you have drawn through to steady the round.
4. Work as many sc, or whatever stitch you are using, into the Loop as is required by pattern.
5. Pull the ends of yarn tight to draw in circle, so you have no hole in the middle of first round.
Making a chain ring
1. Work a chain as long as required by pattern.
2. Join last chain to first with a slip stitch.
Begin first round by working into each chain stitch.
