Wrong Kind of Fat

Many Americans eat too much of the wrong kind of fat. While the relationship between types of dietary fat and health is not as yet clearly understood. Many physicians are recommending modified fat diets from both preventive and treatment standpoints.

In order to carry out these recommendations, people will need to know how to plan their diets and prepare their favorite foods so as to provide more polyunsaturated and less saturated fats than before.

On a modified fat diet you alter these proportions so that your diet contains at least as much polyunsaturated fat as saturated fat. Simple steps that will help lower your saturated fat intake while increasing polyunsaturated fat:

1. Buy only the very leanest cuts of meat.
2. Add more fish and poultry to your diet.
3. Reduce animal fats generally.

4. Avoid excessive use of foods rich in cholesterol such as eggs, most cheeses, whole milk, and most other dairy products.
5. Substitute a "special" margarine for butter or regular margarines.
