Problems with Bladder Function
A more advanced problem is incontinence, when you accidentally leak urine. The most common cause of incontinence is an inability to tell whether your bladder is full, causing it to fill until it overflows.
Men with incontinence often have an enlarged prostate gland pressing on the bladder, which can be treated with medicine or corrected by surgery. All men with diabetes over 40 should have a prostate exam every year.
If you have overflow incontinence, you may be able to manage the problem by reminding yourself to urinate on a schedule every day.
You may strengthen the muscles around the bladder by doing kegel exercises (tensing and relaxing the pelvic muscles), or stopping the flow of urine several times.
If you continue to have trouble, seek help from a bladder specialist (a urologist).
