Weight Affect My Feet

The more we weigh, the more stress is transmitted through our knees, ankles, and feet. Many people with foot pain can get relief just by losing weight.

Heel pain is often weight-related, and arthritis in the knees and feet is frequently worse in people who are overweight. People who are obese have a different gait from those who are not.

Their feet are placed wider than normal because their thighs hold the legs outward. This places the body weight more towards the inner part of the foot, changing completely the mechanics of walking. The result is increased stress on the tendons, ligaments, and joints of the feet.

If you have diabetic neuropathy, your weight is even more important. The stress of additional pounds on numb feet increases the likelihood of your developing ulcers and Charcot deformities (a breakdown of the arch and normal foot structure that can result in swelling, redness, and even broken bones).

If you become pregnant, your feet may change shape and size during the pregnancy and for about six months after the baby is born. Sometimes they remain permanently larger.

Be aware of this and try to wear comfortable, supportive shoes, such as running shoes. High heels are not really a good idea for anyone, but especially for a pregnant woman.
