Being Overweight Causes Insulin Resistance

Being overweight causes insulin resistance. Most Americans are gaining weight instead of losing it because we are eating more total calories (100-300 extra calories per day) and exercising less.

Many overweight adults eat too many calories from carbohydrate-rich foods as they try to cut back on fatty foods. Eating too many carbohydrates if you are insulin resistant will raise blood-sugar levels as well as contribute extra calories.

To lose weight successfully and reduce insulin resistance, reduce your calories by decreasing carbohydrates and fats in your diet. Any diet with fewer calories than you usually eat will help you lose weight and reduce insulin resistance.

The key is to find a pattern of eating that healthily balances all the food groups and is lower in calories than your usual diet.
