Crochet Afghan Hat
Directions are given for Small Size. Changes for Medium and Large Sizes are in parentheses.
2 Ply (2 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 1 skein each of No. 1 White and No. 666 Bottle Green.
Afghan Hook Size F.
1 small button.
HAT—Head Size: 21 (22, 23) Inches.
GAUGE: 11 sc = 2 inches;
5 sc rows = 1 inch.
Afghan Stitch—5 sts = 1 inch;
9 rows = 2 inches
FRONT-Face Band Starting at narrow end with White, ch 7.
1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 5 ch, Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Sc in back loop of each sc across—6 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Repeat 2nd row until total length, when slightly stretched, is 10 1/2 (11, 11/1/2) inches.
TOP 1st row—First Half: Retaining all loops on hook, draw up 53 (55, 58) loops evenly spaced along one long edge of band—54 (56, 59) loops on hook (for method see Fig. 1 on page 24). Drop White, attach Green.
Second Half: With Green, yarn over and draw through 1 loop, * yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from * across.
2nd row-First Half: With Green, draw up a loop in 2nd Vertical bar and in each Vertical bar across—54 (56, 59) loops on hook. Drop Green, pick up White.
Second Half: With White, yarn over and draw through 1 loop, * yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from * across.
3rd row—First Half: With White, draw up a loop in 2nd bar and in each bar across.
Drop White, pick up Green.
Second Half: With Green, yarn over and draw through 1 loop, * yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from * across.
Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until total length is about 5 3/4 (6, 6 1/4) inches, ending with a Green loop row; then, with White complete Second Half of row. Break off and fasten.
BACK Work same as Front, ending with a White loop row; then with Green complete Second Half of row. Break off and fasten. Sew side and top edges together, matching stripes.
BUTTON TAB
Starting at top with White, ch 2.
1st row: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: 2 sc in each of the 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.
3rd row: 2 sc in back loop of first sc, sc in back loop of each sc across to within last sc, 2 sc in back loop of last sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 3rd row until there are 12 sc on row. Ch 1, turn.
Next 4 rows: Sc in back loop of each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Following row: Draw up a loop in back loop of each of first 2 sc, yarn over and draw through 3 loops on hook—1 sc decreased; SC in back loop of each sc across to within last 2 sc, dec 1 sc over last 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Repeat last row until 2 sc remain. Break off and fasten. Sew top of left seam, allowing decreased edge to extend below lower edge of hat. Sew button to center of tab.
CHIN STRAP
Work same as Button Tab until 8 sc remain. Work even until strap, when stretched, fits under chin from ear to ear. Ch 1, turn.
Next row: Sc in back loop of first 3 sc, ch 2, skip next 2 sc, sc in back loop of next 3 sc; ch 1, turn.
Following row: Dec 1 sc over first 2 sc, sc in back loop of next sc, sc in next 2 ch, sc in back loop of next sc, dec 1 sc over last 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Last row: Decreasing 1 sc at each end, sc in back loop of each sc across. Break off and fasten. Sew in place to correspond with Button Tab.
