Treatment Concentrates Initially

Treatment concentrates initially on the Lung, Large Intestine and Three-Heater meridians, with two objectives.

These are: first, to expel the Wind-Heat in order to prevent further penetration to the Lung and to relieve the sore throat; and second, to strengthen the Lung in order to improve its ability to resist and overcome disease.

In order to do this successfully, however, the acupuncturist must assess why there was weakness in the first place and then understand how to rectify it.

Through the strengthening of his Lungs with further treatment, the patient is better able to cope with the grief, moves through it and finds that he is no longer prone to sore throats.

Acupuncture's aim is to build up the body's own, inherent powers of self-defence, rather than bring in outside forces to help fight disease. By re-establishing the body's vitality, treatment makes the patient fitter, stronger and more resistant to future infection.

Although antibiotics can eradicate an infection, by doing so 'from outside', so to speak, they may mask an underlying susceptibility and actually weaken the body's ability to resist disease in future.

Most people who have followed a course of antibiotic treatment for a relatively minor infection are familiar with the sense of weakness and debility associated with taking the drug.
