Vegetable Oil is Used in Fried Foods

Partially hydrogenated vegetable oil is used in fried foods, baked products, and snack foods.

As of January 2006, food manufacturers were required to list trans fats on the Nutrition Facts label of food products.

Trans fatty acids don't affect blood-sugar levels but do increase blood-cholesterol levels, which raises your risk for heart disease.

If less than 30% of your calories come from fat and 10% from saturated fat, you're probably okay.

If you eat a moderately high-fat diet, your trans fatty acid intake may be too high. Avoid processed foods. Choose soft table spreads instead of stick margarine.

Read food labels and select margarine I hat contains no more than 2 grams of saturated fat prr tablespoon, and liquid oil as the first ingredient.

Look for baked products, convenience dinners, and snack foods with less than 2 grams of saturated fat per serving.

Use vegetable oil instead of solid shortening in cooking. Check with your registered dietitian (KD) if you have questions about trans fatty acids.
