Being Safe Under the Sun

Today we are going to talk about the importance of sunscreen. We know already that UVA and UVB rays can both damage collagen fibers and accelerate skin aging.

When buying a sunscreen look at the label to find minerals like Zinc oxide and Titanium dioxide. The sunscreen should have both UVA and UVB protection and, in addition,to have photostability which significantly reduces the skin damage associated with UV exposure.

When applying properly you can depend on SPF 30 to filter out 97% of UVB rays. You start 30 min before sun exposure and reapplyng it after swimming and sweating every 2 hours. The selection of sunscreen should be based on a client's Fitzpatrick skin type.

Type1 -This type always burns and never tans in the sun. They must use a sunscreen with SPF 30 +

Type2-This type almost always burns and rarely tans-in the sun. Type 2 has a very high risk for melanoma and should use'SPF 30 + .

Type 3-This type sometimes burns and sometimes tans in the sun and need a sunscreen at least SPF 15 every day, should w«ear protective clothing and avoid high sun exposure.

Type 4-These individuals tans easily and are likely to burn, yet are still at risk for sun damaae. use SPF 15+ And another important part of our concern is the aging of the hands.

'Not wearing sunscreen  the hands is a resuns in loss of collagen, skin thinning, dehydration and development of the sun sports.
